Beginning Hand Quilting

This workshop covers the basic essentials for successful hand quilting, including discussion of needles, thimbles, thread, marking tools, batting types and fabric types. Students will mark, baste and begin to hand quilt a feathered heart which can be completed at home and used as a small wall-hanging or the front of a pillow.

Beginning Hand Applique

Basic needle-turn hand appliqué stitch is taught while working on a stress-free heart design. Learn how to handle innies and outies!
Beginning Level.

Intermediate Hand Quilting

This class covers everything one needs to know in order to hand quilt. The quilting stitch is taught and all kinds of questions are answered that you always wanted to ask.

Stems & Branches
Hand Applique

Never wonder how to make stems or branches again! Students will learn several ways to create appliqued stems and branches to enhance their applique. Knowledge of needleturn applique technique will be assumed. No project involved.

The Boutis

Learn to create translucent quilted art! Once known as "nun's work," the boutis is a thing of beauty and rarity. Class is intended for intermediate to advanced hand quilters. NOT a beginning quilting class.
Intermediate and above.

Arashi Shibori
pole-dyeing

Learn to pole-dye cotton fabric using Procion MX dyes. This workshop requires at least two restaurant-style sinks and tables for dye vats.

Basket of Tulips

Receive the pattern for "Basket of Tulips",a four-block quilt created by four friends, including Andi. The full quilt containing this block was published in Red, Green & Beyond by Nancy Hornback and Terry Clothier Thompson. Unitized flower construction and needleturn applique techniques will be taught. Students are encouraged to use their favorite cotton fabrics to create either a traditional or contemporary style quilt block.

Receive the pattern for the "Basket of Tulips Vase Block". Unitized flower construction and needleturn applique techniques will be taught. Students are encouraged to use their favorite cotton fabrics to create either a traditional or contemporary style quilt block.

Whigged Out on the West Coast

Make applique blocks using Andi's patterns for “Whigged Out on the West Coast”, as seen in the QNM 2004 Wall Calendar. The block is appliquéd using the overlay method, so there are no marking lines on your quilt top! Stems, flowers and leaves and appliqué stitch are covered. Finishing the quilt using wavy sashings will be discussed.
All Levels.

Whigged Out Rose Block

Learn to create Andi's altered Whig Rose block. A pattern from her quilt, "Whigged Out on the West Coast", will be used and methods for creating the block will be learned. Needleturn applique will be covered in class, although students who use other hand applique techniques will be tolerated! Unitized construction, marking and overlay techniques will be taught.

Dazzling Dogwoods

Applique your own Dogwood forest using Andi's pattern. Learn to paint white flower petals and embellish with beads, ruching and other techniques.
Intermediate and above.
1 - 4 Days

Dogwood Blossoms

Learn to create pink and white dogwood blossoms. White, PFD fabric will be either painted or colored with pencils to create natural-looking dogwood blossoms. Flowers will be needleturn appliqued using unitized construction. They can then be used in each student's personal design. Some beading and ruching techniques used for flower centers.

Circle of Illusion

Have fun watching your eye-popping circle of illusion come to life with Andi's own pattern as seen on Simply Quilts (HGTV). A two-color, optical circle of illusion is deceptively simple to make. Machine sewing.
All Levels.

Learn to make this large (approx. 60" diameter) circle as seen in Andi's quilt, 1910 Revisited.
Machine sewing.

Fees

All new contracts require a minimum booking of two days, consisting of either a lecture and a workshop
OR 2 days of workshops.
If there is a “down” day” between workshops and lecture and it is more than 50 miles for Andi to drive home, a $225 charge will be add to price.

Workshops:  $700/day. Price is for 20 students. Add $15 per person; up to 25 students maximum.

Lectures:  $350. Sponsor should provide a podium with light, microphone and projection screen.

    • Trunk Show (available for guilds and shows within driving distance only.
    • Quilting Designs: Styles and Textures Using Andi's quilts as examples, learn about a variety of quilting motifs and possible ways to use them. Compares hand and machine quilting. Sponsor should provide a podium with light and microphone.
    • New Trunk Show!: Andi’s collection of vintage and antique quilts and some works by contemporary quilt artists. (available for groups within driving distance only)

Travel Costs:

A per-mile driving fee is charged (current IRS rate) when area workshops or lectures are given. Overnight stays require room and board, but a private room in a non-smoking, non-pet-owner's home is fine. Long distance travel requires airfare as well as transportation to and from the airport.
